Gone Harvestin’

a poem by Frank Diamond

The last of Autumn passed by slow
As if hesitant to come or leave
As if choice could countenance our toll
Where weathervanes just up and drop
Where time pauses neatly but doesn’t stop
And the last of Autumn kept coming on
Through leafy trees leaks our Winter song
And I have a Girlfriend, and a Girlfriend have I
We laugh and love and layer the rye
Gathering what we never troubled before
Seven years of life for seven years of more
